The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has warned the public to be wary of unregulated gambling websites offering free spins, extra credits and other incentives.
On Tuesday, the ACMA sent out an alert highlighting the risk of engaging with text messages and emails sent out by phoney online casinos.
According to the media watchdog, the online gambling scam has struck more than 6,000 times since the turn of the year.
“There’s no such thing as free money,” said ACMA spokesperson Fiona Cameron.
“Don’t let yourself be conned into believing you have any credit or bonuses with these casinos – you don’t.
“This is just a phishing expedition to steal your identity or infect your computer with malicious malware.
“Remember if it looks too good to be true, it probably is.”
The most prominent offenders are Bonza Spins, Pokie Spins and Roo Casino, all of which are specifically aimed at Australian punters.
It is illegal to operate an online casino in Australia, while none of the brands above are licensed by a reputable offshore gambling regulator.
